Portable velocity and discharge measurement for streams and open channels

The Ott MF Pro is a portable magnetic inductive current meter designed for measuring point velocity and calculating discharge in streams, smaller rivers, canals and measurement flumes.

The system combines a compact sensor with a rugged handheld display. Its guided workflow takes the operator through each vertical in the measurement cross section, automatically records the results and calculates total discharge according to recognised international methods.

With no moving mechanical parts, reliable low flow performance and a robust field ready design, the Ott MF Pro provides an efficient alternative to conventional mechanical current meters.

Built for field use

Both the sensor and handheld unit are designed for demanding environmental monitoring work.

The sensor carries an IP68 protection rating. The handheld is rated IP67 when its USB cover is correctly attached.

A transflective colour display supports visibility in bright outdoor conditions, while the moulded, shock absorbing handheld enclosure provides protection during routine field use.

Real time velocity information

Point velocity is shown directly on the handheld unit’s colour display. A real time graph allows the operator to observe the measurement trend and assess when conditions have stabilised.

This immediate feedback supports more informed field decisions and helps the operator identify unstable or unusual flow conditions before completing the measurement.

Reliable measurements in challenging conditions

The Ott MF Pro uses the magnetic inductive principle to measure water velocity.

Unlike a mechanical current meter, the sensor has no propeller or other moving components. This allows it to measure velocity without a rotor being affected by weeds, organic material, sediment or low flow.

Its compact sensor is suitable for measurements in water as shallow as approximately 3.18 cm, making it particularly useful for small streams, shallow channels and low flow investigations.

Guided discharge measurements

The handheld unit guides the user through the complete measurement cross section, from the first vertical to the last.

Measured point velocities are stored automatically. At the end of the survey, the instrument uses the recorded data to calculate total discharge.

Optional automatic depth measurement

Selected Ott MF Pro configurations

include an integrated absolute pressure sensor for automatic water depth measurement.

Automatic depth measurement reduces the need to enter values manually and can help make field surveys faster and more consistent.

The available depth measurement range is 0 to 3.05 m.

Automatic data storage and calculation

The MF Pro records velocity, depth and cross section information during the survey. Its internal memory accommodates up to 10 measurement locations, with up to 32 vertical profiles at each location.

Automatic recording helps reduce handwritten field notes and the risk of transcription errors. Calculating discharge in the field also reduces the amount of post processing required in the office.

Simple USB data transfer

Completed measurements can be transferred from the handheld unit to a computer through its five pin USB Mini-B interface.

Data is exported in tab separated value format, allowing it to be opened and processed using compatible spreadsheet and data analysis software.

MF PRO HANDSET

The Ott MF Pro handset provides clear, real time velocity readings on its bright 3.5 inch colour display. Its guided menu leads the operator through each measurement vertical, automatically stores the collected data and calculates total discharge using recognised international methods.

Designed for demanding field conditions, the lightweight handset has an IP67 water resistant enclosure when the USB cover is secured. Measurements can be exported to a computer through the USB Mini-B connection, reducing manual transcription and simplifying data processing.
