Ott C2
The Ott C2 Small Current Meter is a high precision mechanical current meter designed for accurate flow velocity measurements in shallow water and low flow conditions. Proven over decades of field use, the Ott C2 remains a trusted instrument for hydrometric surveys, laboratory testing, and hydraulic modelling.
With its compact design, robust construction, and interchangeable propellers, the Ott C2 is ideally suited to environments where lightweight, reliable, and precise flow measurement is required.

Designed for Shallow & Low Velocity Measurements
The Ott C2 is specifically recommended for applications where water depths are limited and conventional current meters are impractical.
Typical measurement conditions include:
- Minimum water depth: approx. 4 cm
- Flow velocity range: from 0.025 m/s up to 5.0 m/s (depending on propeller selection)
This makes the Ott C2 ideal for small channels, flumes, conduits, and laboratory models.
How the Ott C2 Works
The Ott C2 uses a precision propeller mounted on a low friction spindle. As water flows past the instrument:
- The propeller rotates proportionally to flow velocity
- Each revolution generates an electrical pulse via a magnetically actuated contact
- Pulses are counted over a defined time interval
- Flow velocity is calculated using a calibrated equation specific to each propeller
Each propeller is individually calibrated in Ott’s rating tank, ensuring high measurement accuracy.
Key Features & Benefits
High Measurement Accuracy
- Precision stainless steel ball bearings in an oil filled chamber
- Accuracy of approximately ±1% of measured value under oblique flow conditions
- Proven cosine response for angled flows
Modular Propeller System
- Interchangeable propellers for different velocity ranges
- Propeller diameters: 30 mm and 50 mm
- Component effect correction for oblique flow measurements
Robust & Field Proven Design
- Streamlined, corrosion resistant meter body
- Pressure tight magnetic contact rated up to 30 bar
- Designed for long service life in demanding environments
Lightweight & Portable
- Ideal for remote locations and manual surveys
- Compatible with 9 mm and 20 mm wading rods and relocating devices

Mounting & Deployment Options
The Ott C2 can be mounted in several configurations depending on site conditions:
- Direct mounting on 9 mm measuring rods
- Use with relocating devices for accurate vertical positioning
- Clamping systems for 20 mm rods (recommended for bridge measurements)
Graduated rods allow precise depth positioning of the propeller relative to the stream bed, improving repeatability and accuracy
Counters & Data Collection
The Ott C2 is used in conjunction with dedicated pulse counters, including:
Z21 Counter
- Manual pulse counting with stopwatch
- Simple and robust for basic measurements
Z30 Counter
- Preset time intervals for automated pulse counting
- Built in quartz clock
Z215 Counter
- LCD display for pulses and time
- Supports point and integration measurements
These counters convert propeller revolutions into reliable velocity readings under field and laboratory conditions
Ott C2 Applications
The Ott C2 Small Current Meter is widely used for:
- Hydrometric field surveys
- Shallow stream and channel flow measurement
